Seriously, i mean what the topic title says.
I expect a lot of people will know to do so. This post is for those that dont or those that think.. "ive got directx 9.0c, why do i need to download it again?" answer = "you might have the old version of directx 9.0c.. theres a new one out."
I was getting low-mid framerates on my system. The newest update for DirectX (october) increased the framerate a fair bit. Also increased framerates in all other games, and my 3dmark06 score.
You can download the latest version of directx here
http://www.microsoft.com/directx
Even if you think you have the latest version. It still doesnt hurt to download this. You'd be surprised what it might update on your system.
Its an online update program. Not a big download really. Will require authentication on the microsoft website to allow you to download.
To naysayers - Yes, this is bloomin obvious to some. But it might not be to others. Why wasnt it obvious to me? It was, i just couldnt authenticate my new system until i was sure it had burnt in correctly. Although i was quite surprised at the speed increase i got. |

Latest version that does not requires windows validation:
Also, you are totally correct. Even if it is the same version number as what you have installed, if you installed it before October, you should go ahead and install the new one. They do update these and a lot of games do take advantage of it. Added it to my tweaks page at

It's also a quick update for those that are close to the latest version, as, instead of re-installing everything, the installer checks your current files and only updates those that need to be updated. It's a win-neutral situation! _________________ When the snake falls in love with the spaghetti, it's time to buy a new hat. |

Heh. I'm a Firefox user. I *never* use IE for anything and removed all the shortcuts, etc. |

Just thought I'd drop in and add that after doing this, i got almost 9-10 *more* fps. It made a huge difference. Awesome find. |

Perhaps the mods should consider 'sticky-ing' this thread. I think that A LOT of people do not know about this...
Personally, I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't use 9.0d, 9.0e, etc etc... |

Just select Desktop...
It will be easiest for you to find it as it will appear directly on your desktop in the icons. _________________ Tragedy in Tragidor Campaign and the sequel Tales of the Asberdies. Blog Dev Site |

Thanks for the quick reply. I did that when I downloaded the update. I have the update on my desktop but when I go to install it I ger prompted to add it to a specific location and then it gives me a browse button. If I select Desktop than it just liters my desktop with like 20 icons. |

Lol, Sorry man, that was my fault,
I didn't catch the "install part" of your post.
You need to install to Windows/system32/DirectX _________________ Tragedy in Tragidor Campaign and the sequel Tales of the Asberdies. Blog Dev Site |

Yes, this is one case of serious version numbering madness on Microsoft's part.
There are MANY different DirectX "9.0c" versions. Usually the latest is best, but it's definitely confusing a lot of people that they all have the same version number despite being different versions. _________________ In those days, spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. |

FPS before installing new dx drivers: 26-32 FPS after installing new dx drivers: 26-32
Seriously, no tips at all on this forum have increased my performance on my desktop machine. (except for the overclocking tip, wich drastically improved performance on my laptop).
Still, I won't ditch good advice like this. It's always good to install the latest drivers. Probably it improves some dx option that I have disabled anyway to get these decent framerates. _________________ Help. Help. I'm being repressed! |
