From all I've read here, NWN characters cannot be imported into NWN2. Remember, NWN2 uses different rules (3.5E). |

Actually, no, I don't believe you ill be able to import your character, nor do I think it was ever suggested.
The character classes are being upgraded to D&D 3.5 rules from 3.0 rules and there are differences that may not be easily accounted for.
You can import scripts, conversations, even many items as a designer/builder, but not as a player/character, is my understanding.
Since the new game requires you starting out as 1st level, it wouldn't make sense to import your old character(s) in the first place.Edited By Selene Moonsong on 04/14/06 23:13 |

In fact, it's not worth the trouble to make an importer. Only characters under lvl20 would be importable, and the ruleset changes make even that much quite iffy.
Instead, remake your characters and level them up on a level-up mod. _________________ Too lazy to change sigs... no, really.

This is more of a concern for folks running and playing on PW's.
As a DM will set up a day or two to hand convert (by request) PC's from NWN to NWN2. I'll do this by recording their NWN stats and equipment then use the DM functions to match them as close as possible in NWN2.Edited By Oswald Hammersmith on 04/17/06 19:11 |

Why?
Not only is this a bad idea imho (the new rules offers new options and if you make the choices you are denying the players the ability to take advantage of the changes to 3.5), I also think it is a waste of your time.
Just let them make new characters and give them the appropriate amount of experience and let them build their own all new characters from scratch. If they want to rebuild the same character, great. And if they don't that should be their prerogative.
(Of course - personally, I think you should do a full wipe and start EVERYONE over again at first level. But I recognize that some people think the point is to level, not to roleplay and I thus I accept that some people would feel 'cheated' if they lost their 'hard-earned' experience.)

To be clear, what I meant is when they reqest a conversion I'll record their gear with any bonuses it gives them. They will log in to the NWN2 server to recreate their character and I will use the DM tools to give them the appropriate amount of XP. My only stipulation is that it must be the same character. If they want a new one they can start from scratch. Edited By Oswald Hammersmith on 04/19/06 05:11 |

Once they are done levelling, I'll provide replacement gear as close to their original as possible. |

I wouldn't find it worth the effort to make an importer, but there's some awfully weird definitions of the word impossible being bandied about here. Since when is a few hours of planning, a few hours of coding and a few hours of testing impossible? |

Really, it depends a lot on what makes it into the next game. For instance! There are no epic levels, so any bonus of thoose levels will be lost. +10 items are likely not supported in the new engine, feats like circle kick, curse song, dirty fighting, divine might/shield, extra stunning attacks and music, improved expertise, lingering song, resist disease, poison, resistance to energy and Zen Archery may not be in NWN2 either. So how will you transfer these abilities? Remove them? Give items that replace them using custom scripts?
As you can see, it may not be an easy thing, even if you do manage to make the characters transferable. And the work-around is probably a waste of time and you are better off letting everyone redo their characters. |

In some ways, it would be like trying to import characters from BG into NWN, the rules for character classes were too far different since BG was based on AD&D 2E rules and NWN was based on 3.0 rules.
This time around, the change is not quite as drastic, but there are many changes that would cause players to do things differently such as skills, feats, multi-classes, new sub-races, likely some new PrCs, new and changed spells, etc. The thing is, we don't know how vast the differences are between the two games.
Not impossible, but it would still require a lot of manual intervention despite the capabilities of top-notch programmers. It would likely take a few months worth of programming to accomodate all the possibilities.
The way I see it, it might be easier to simply manually re-create old characters as someone mentioned previously than to spend a lot of effort developing a conversion system that would still likely require a lot of manual intervention in the end.Edited By Selene Moonsong on 04/19/06 10:23 |
