I had a sweet upgrade all mapped out last night on newegg.com and with an athlon x2 3800+ dual core cpu, but this morning they were either gone or sold out. The next available was a 4200+, to rich at the moment for my blood.
I ended up with a single core 3800+ AM2 socket, so I could later just upgrade by switching out the cpu with a dual core, budget friendly.
Here is what I ended up with, about a $400 upgrade overall with a $15 rebate on the graphic card = $385.

Production of the low-numbered A64 X2s hit EoL fairly quickly, but there should be plenty for awhile, did you check with mWave or ZipZoomFly? Fact is, the X2s don't represent a strong option to Intel CPUs, which isn't the case for those low-numbered single core A64s still available. Right now, as you move from budget level to more of a mid-level shopping zone, AMD doesn't have any price to performance lead, and loses parity rapidly moving into the upper part of Medium Performance.
You do realize that there will be no Tech Talk forum for four or five days, right? Everything will all go either "general" or "Toolset" in about half of an hour, plus the time to get the new versions of those two activated. _________________ . Kiwi

Yes, but compared to a 3800+ 939 socket, there was like $15 difference. It makes sense to drop the 939 line and go AM2, there is more upgrade options for cheap, especially if these duals drop in price in a few months, which I assume they will. If you compare it to the 939 budget system you have posted elsewhere in the forums for around $370, you get more bang for the buck upgrade-wise with my $385 AM2 path.
I did try all the other online stores and the 3800+ dual cores are flying out the door. I assume a lot of people are taking this budget/mid range upgrade route.
Thanks for the heads up on the forum changes. I just wanted to get the word out that these cpu's (3800's AM@) are going fast. |

P/S: I am a big AMD fan, so this was my reason for losing the Intel edge. AMD has always been rock solid for me, and usually cheaper. |

The only thing I was wondering about is why you went with 2x 512 mb ram? You would've been off much better with 1x 1024 because you can easily add another stick. The advantage Dual Channel offers isn't really that big as they'd like you to believe, unless on a Pentium 4 processor from what I gathered. |

Although my first 486 was an AMD part, I had two Intel Pentium CPUs, on Intel MBs, between AMD processors. However, that PII-400 on a 440BX chipset board, was a loser. Kept me from ever buying another Intel chipset of any sort, and not an ATI GPU either, for several years. The Thunderbird 1.33 was a winner, and it's been AMD all the way since then.
Yes, I built an Intel based Firewall Box, but the parts for it were practically free. Then, my son, who is a technophobe of major order, finally wanted a PC. I used Intel for the CPU to avoid having to go through a long song and dance about the differences in CPU brands.
It took Oblivion to show me nVidia's weaknesses.

I was wondering the same thing a few days ago, so I read through some tech forums and apparently, even with AMD, there is quite an advantage with the dual channels. I forget the percentage, but it was enough for me. I still have two memory sockets free on that board and later when I get the dual core cpu, I can maybe ugrade the memory to the 800's and get 2gig, probably when Windows Vista hits.
It would be a little cheaper to get 1mb stick of ram, saving you even more money overall. It's all good. |
