As posted in the general discussion forum, there is a problem with Xfire running at the same time as NWN2. In some cases, it can more than halve your framerate. You can either disable Xfire while running NWN2 or try this solution, posted at the Xfire boards:

WEEE-OOO, WEEE-OOO, here's a fix update from one of the Xfire guys:
***
Here's something you can do if you're comfortable editing the Xfire_games.ini file in your Xfire directory.
Scroll down to the Neverwinter Nights 2 entry near the bottom of the file, it looks like this:
What you need to do is modify the entry slightly, which should speed up the frame rate for you quite a bit. You need to add "|DISABLE_RELEASE" to the end of the line that begins with "InGameFlags=". When you're done, it should look like the entry below:
View Post/Code in separate window
Once you've done this, save the file. Now go back to Xfire and click Tools>Options>Games. Just going to the games tab will force Xfire to reload the games.ini and update your XIG support for NWN2 with the info you added Wink
Let us know how this works for you and if it's good, we'll get it out to everyone in the next game update!
Thanks for the report, and let us know if this helps!

This one, I can confirm, does work......beforehand, my frame-rates, with absolute base-settings in 800x600, refused to go above 17fps even in quiet placements.
Making the above change increased that straight up to 55fps, which let me play around with the settings a bit more......seems to sit stable at 25-35fps (depending on how busy the area is) in 1024x768, with a few settings ramped up a little. |

thanx for the info! i'll try it as soon as possible!
if i modify the line that says "InGameRenderer=D3D9", is there a chance to also increase the fps?Edited By ChristosFoX on 11/06/06 18:26 |

I've exited Xfire before starting the game and my framerate was in the same range it was when I was running Xfire with NWN2. I'll try it again when I get home, though. |

You guys are life savers. Since I got to the City of Neverwinter the frames have dropped so low the game became unplayable.
Disabling Xfire and Steam(which should have never been open in the first place) really really jumped up the frames. Now its running smooth as silk. |

So if I install xfire it will help m framerate? No, if you have Xfire running while playing the game it will hurt your frame rate. So either do what the developer that started the thread started. Don't install Xfire at all, or never have it running while playing the game. |

Ok, I did NOT install xfire when i installed the game. My framerate is 2-7 fps depending on whether I am inside or out, near npcs or not. (i.e. my frate is 2 outside/near npcs and up to 7 inside/alone). I think the first poster here was wondering if xfire needed to be installed and then given the settings the dev just suggested? If not, if its a 'no' to even installing xfire, then this fix doesn't help me, the original poster, or those like us who do not use or even have xfire installed and still have tremendously bad / unplayable framerates. |

sigh.
I'm so tired of tweaking my computer. I keep getting the feeling I will eventually tweak it in a way that my other games will stop working.
It doesnt even feel like tweaking to me. No matter what I do the framerate never changes. change this setting edit this file click this box.
You can't really tweak until you can play IMO. Back to my question will I get a better framerate if I install Xfire? Install with these settings? Install and just not turn on? I'm not even really sure what Xfire is. |

Hi guys,
Xfire is kind of like a MSN Messenger for gamers. It lets you find friends online, see what games their playing, and join them. It has some similarities to GameSpy Arcade, but in a more Messenger type interface. I particularly like it because you can use it *while* you play games without having to Alt-Tab out.
It's not necessary to install though, and actually running it previously was causing some drops in frame rate in NWN2. What Josh posted here resolves that, but from what I hear, Xfire has already taken care of it in a login patch, so you shouldn't need to do anything but just connect.
...so, if you're having frame rate issues at this point, Xfire won't improve it, but it should not longer hamper it.
Thanks! Darren |
