OK, I'm sure many of you will have worked this out, but since I can't find a post I'll tell you.

Obsidian seem to have forgotten to add the speaker settings to the menu! Unbelieveable I know, but it seems to be true. I was gobsmacked I can tell you! What were the beta testers thinking?

Still, it is a great game, and with the refelective+refractive water turned off works very smoothly.

How to get proper sound? Well, just go in to the NWN.INI file in your 'My Documents' folder (NOT THE ONE IN THE NWN2 FOLDER you run your game from!) and under '[Sound Options]' add the 'Speaker Type' setting from your NWN.INI file (actually in the NWN1 folder). For 5.1 sound, this is 'Speaker Type=4'. Remember to set your speaker settings in windows (or your soundcard's control panel, or both with some cards) to 5.1 as well, since NWN2 has been switching it to 2.0 for kicks when you've been running it before. Hey Presto! 5.1 surround works easily.

Well, I say easily, but it's a bit of a bind for those without NWN1. A surprising lapse in attention there Obsidian. Lessons learnt I hope?

I was promoting this same thing, and it seemed to work perfectly for my 7.1 speaker settings (which is =5 in the ini), but I just discovered that my system had been reset to a 2 speaker setup outside the game regardless of that setting. Here I thought it was working great, too. So, I gave in and now have SpeakerGuard installed to see how that works out.

I think I should add an here.

Actually, for 5.1 sound this does seem to work, and last. At least with my Audigy 2. Any other experiences?

You were using the setting in your 'My Documents' folder weren't you? Not in the game folder...

Perhaps it's your sound card that won't take to this fix, or 7.1. What happens when you try 5.1?

I have an Audigy 2 ZS, and I was using the ini in the game folder, not the one in the My Documents folder. Using SpeakerGuard seems to have worked, as I can now go in and out of the game, with the ini settings at =5 (7.1) and have everything work fine.

That's your problem then. Use the one in your 'My Documents' folder. That'll work, I'm sure. Does for me.

Don't mess with the one in the game folder. It seems to be a default file or something.

I changed the ini in the My Documents location, and my sound no longer switches back to 2.1. 5.1 it remains.

thank you for this work around. I was getting tired of alt-tabbing out of the game to change the speaker settings back in the control panel.

Nice, I will update my home system when I get home. Too bad I spend all my time playing on my laptop.

Yep, many people had this problem, a pretty big oversight by the devs.

Ah, that'd explain it. I was using the one in the game folder because it had all the settings in there already. I didn't even think to add it to the My Documents one. Duh! You'd think I'd have gotten the hang of game tech support by now, but sometimes an old dog needs to be retrained on the old tricks.
