Author Unpacking Module Hang Possible Fix

Having run into a bug where trying to go to particular areas (in my case, going to Crossroads Keep late in Act II) would result in the game hanging at the "unpacking module" stage, and having played with some things, I finally fixed it:

I went into the save files folder and simply renamed the failing files (in this case 2100_Crossroad_Keep_A2.sav and .Z) to something else (tacked on .old to the end). Most of them are very nicely labled, so there shouldn't be too much guess-work. Having done that, I loaded the save back up and it worked fine. It allowed me into the area, all conversation trees seem to be intact and where they should be, and I've yet to run into any continum issues.

Hopefully this works for more than just me and doesn't mess things up later on down the line (midway through Act III now with no noticeable effects). It's at least something to try for you people who are having problems.

For the technically interested, it seemed that, while the .sav file was fine, the .Z file was the problem--while every other .Z file has inside it a "-" file with scripts and other things, the problem .Z file was completely empty--seems the save process didn't write it for whatever reason.

Let me know if you run into any issues with it. I seem to have skipped a few scenes, but as they were a ways after when I had my issue, I'm not sure if renaming the file caused it or if the skipped scenes are from an entirely different problem.

first of all, big thanks for youre efforts.
Im stuck at the same situation as well, but have on problem to figure out, b efore i can use your workaround:
Im at the state, wer i must become a squire, so im in the watch office in merchants district, the knight accepts me as a squire and takes me to the glade for the initiation rite.
And *zack*, right her it hitz me, while transferring from the office to the glade.

Now my question: Which module is the glade?

Hi all,

I'm a bit of a forum noob, but I've been having some issues with something similar... I believe I'm having some issue with the Crossroad Keep A2 file. It is a hang when I try to enter the Courtyard which seems to be triggered by me entering The Merchants Quarter, The Wendersnaven Clearing, or Nolaloths area and then attempting to return to the Crossroad Keep courtyard area, upon which it hangs at the end of loading the area, I have a few seconds of black screen and then the old "Neverwinter Nights 2 has encountered a problem and has to close; send error report" etc. After this happens, earlier saves which were at the keep hang about halfway through loading and then get a crash, with message as above.

I tried renaming the .Z and sav. files to .old files, and unpacked the .Z file - there was a "-" file in there but it was'nt empty (about 51.mb) so I'm guessing I may not have the same problem as you - although when I tried to lad the save after renaming it to .old, I got a message saying "could not load module may be corrupt" type thing. So I renamed em back.

Pretty stumped and frustrated, Act 3 has been a real chore. I do agree with some other posters on the fact that it feels like I am beta-testing this game, and I think its unfair that I should have had to pay full price for doing so - I've now spent many, many hours trying to identify this bug and find a workaround for it. Not my idea of the fun game time that I paid for.

Needless to say, if anyone knows of a solution Id be eternally grateful. Thanks y'all.

Well, also I've the same problem on the Italian version of nwn2, where I can find the Save folder to correct the string and then try to resume my game.. at the merchant quarter it seems to be blocked..

I have a similar issue. It is after the Flagon conversation where Shandra joins my party. I believe this is right before Act II starts. The conversation finishes and it unpacks and loads a new module. It moves to a loading screen with a picture of a throne (I assume some kind of cut scene to start Act II), the progress bar gets right to the middle and the text says it successfully loaded the module however it just hangs there until it times out and the game crashes. I don't see any blank *.Z files, have any suggestions?

Same sort of problem on two different PCs, one with an ATI card & another with NVidia card. Can't get back to my keep after I talk to all the NPCs post-knighting in Chapter III.

I've spent two days on both PCs trying to work it out, going back a few saves and trying other things (like not building certain things), making various option changes, driver updates, etc.

Done with this game until another patch comes out. Appreciate having the honor and being able to pay to waste so much time on it.

I'm having a similar issue. I can no longer go to Highcliff or Ft. Locke due to module load hang. Renaming did not seem to work. I tried to look at the "-" file and it says it is corrupt. I want to do some recruiting in those areas, but apparently I'm out of luck. This is just the latest in a series of bugs that have left a very sour taste in this NWN fan's mouth.

I've had this problem happen with two games so far. My suspicion is that the hang-up happens when you are trying to move between two areas and the area that you are going to move into is going to spawn a mini-movie.

I tried this fix on one of my games and it loaded the section beautifully! The only problem is... I was unable to interact with any of the NPCs or enter the Watch building to advance my quest (I took the side of the City Watch on this particular game).

Is there something that you did other than rename the area Z and SAV files to .old that enabled you to still interact with that area and remember where you were in your quests?

i have the exact same issue as sEliNaRen and mike9004.

same place
same crash in the middle of loading screen
etc...
i have no clue as to what the hell is wrong with it.

none of my saves near the githyanki's caves work so i restarted at the beginning of that quest. (with an older save game that loads.)

still the exact same problem though...

i don't think i have a corrupt save though because i have the "-" in all the .z files.

any fixes yet?

I'm currently crashing at the same spot.

Had issues with hangs during module load in the Flagon after rescuing Shandra (and a few places after that) but was able to work around those by unsummoning all pets in the party prior to talking to Shandra in the Gith lair (or transitioning areas/triggering cutscenes elsewhere). At this point I don't even bother summoning them.

Can't seem to get around the crash entering the keep courtyard though.

I got the problem when I was going back to west harbor to recruit farmers for my keep. I tried the workaround which allowed it to load, however when I loaded west harbor it was back at the point where it got attacked at the beginning of the game...

Is there any other way to fix this?
