You probably subconsciously pan to an area that is not semi-transparent faded anyways, it's very distracting and annoying.
Once my conscious caught up and I turned off the autofade, the game looks better, the camera feels better, and the FPS improved.
Don't miss out, shut off “Object Fade” before it's too late! |

After testing, I can confirm this is a huge boost to the frames per second (Ed: specifically the consistency of the FPS and smoothness of the camera). Personally, I prefer how it makes the UI/game look and feel, but the FPS needed second mention as it's a markable improvement. Edited By Volsys on 11/12/06 05:31 |

i always hate when the transparent area gets in front of my view anyway. i always twist the camera around to where i can see my characters plainly. i'll give this a try! |

Sounds good... gonna have to try it...
Any actual numbers to compare FPS before and after turning it off? |

The best way to describe the frames increase is...
When the camera goes behind an object that fades (which is very often), the framerate takes a hit anywhere from 5-20 fps. Just having it off keeps the frames consistent which improves the smoothness (and enjoyement) of the game.
If you haven't tried it, try it. You'll notice a difference in almost every area. |

It didn't make a lick of difference for me. My framerates running around the Neverwinter market district were a steady 15 frames per second whether or not I had object fade enabled. This is on a mid-range system (2.6GHz CPU, Geforce 6600GT video card). I left it enabled since I like not having my view blocked. |

Yeah. Bump. More people should know about this. The game looks better and is faster with no object fade. |

how can I see my FPS?
Bring up the console with the ~ key.
Type showfps after the #
Hit Enter
Hit the ~ key again.
Note: this puts a lot of distracting text on your screen, so I don;t recomend using it all the time. _________________ Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with my 2 cents. No one is listening, too busy patting themselves on the back for a job half-a.... accomplished. |

Holy hell, this does work! And in adress of another, related gripe, the camera speed can be turned up in the same menu. Not as good as NWN, but getting there... |

I'd like to thank the op. I tested this last night, and with object fade turned off, I was able to raise my resolution to the max setting and still get good fps. That probably won't work if you have poor preformance (had good preformance myself with a mid range resolution), but this could help quite a few people. Is there a game tweak thread stickied anywhere on these forums? If not, we could definately use one. I'd hate to see good ideas such as this get lost in the shuffle! _________________ Soul Forge - Persistent Worlds for NWN and NWN2 http://soulforge.nwvault.ign.com/

This tip is true for middle and lower end cards and some of the older high end cards.
For newer cards it doesn't really do anything - for me with a 1900XT it does nothing notifiable.
Some of the lower end and older cards simply doesn't deal with transparency that well and thus it has an impact on performance. |

Maybe, but it is still useful for some people. My card isn't exactly low end (ati mobility firegl v5200) but then, it also isn't supported or technically a gaming card either. But I did get my resolution to max, which is saying something I'd think. It's worth a shot, and at this point I'd rather people have another tip to try than post how awful the graphics are. _________________ Soul Forge - Persistent Worlds for NWN and NWN2 http://soulforge.nwvault.ign.com/
