If you have an ATI card and use ATI Tray Tools, you might want to read this.
With the newer catalyst control center, ATI cards has two sets of clock speeds. 2d and 3d. 2d is much slower, but enough to handle 2d stuff like the desktop, etc. When you run a 3d application, it flips over to the 3d set of clocks which are the normal/higher ones.
Now, as it turns out, for whatever reason, ATI tray tools disables this feature (called ATI Poller) without telling you. That is, it's set to do this as DEFAULT.
The end result? You end up playing your 3d games in underclocked 2d mode.
I've been using Tray tools forever. I never knew this. And I never knew that in effect I've been running my 1900xtx under fing clocked.
For months
It wasn't until I read some obscure post about it that I put it to the test. I turned on the On Screen Display for FPS and GPU/MEM clock speeds in Tray tools. I booted into a game and sure enough, the gpu/mem speeds are running at 2d speeds..not 3d.
Tools>Options>General Options> and uncheck Kill ATIHotkey Poller.
Rebooted, started game up and sure as ***, I'm now at 3d speeds and have higher FPS.
The difference in speeds:
2d Mode: GPU 500 mhz 2d Mode: MEM 594 MHZ
What's even worse, I've been overclocking my machine..but it never even got used.
3d Mode: GPU 688 Mhz 3d Mode: GPU 792 Mhz
This is version 1.2.6.955 of Tray Tools btw. Maybe this might help others. |

I was wrong about one thing. It apparently does say something about turning off the poller when you boot it up, but I had no idea what the poller was and just agreed. It apparently does this so you can use the overclocking features in Tray Tools. However, I just used the Catalyst Control Center to to this..so had no idea what a "Poller" did.
I'm not blaming the software, it does what you tell it, but it might have caused some other people have slower cards as well. |

I noticed this aswell, one night I'm running 85C, the next I'm running 67C. So I remembered the pop box asking to kill the poller or not. I also noticed that with the 3d clocks disabled, game play speed wasn't as bad, and I prefer the lower temp. |
