Beware everyone. Securom (the copy protection of NWN2) will install files into your C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\SecuRom\
These files are undeletable. Also it will create undeletable entries on your windows Registry @ HKCU\Software\SecuRom\.
It also loads a hidden driver that can be seen on your Device Manager when you enable "show hidden devices". |

there is also a .dll and an executable.
Whats realy annoying is when I un-installed the game the registry, directory and .dll where left behind. You can delete the .dll after a bit of messing around, the registry I havent been able to remove (securom tell me it cannot be removed and they offer no tool to do so).
Im told there was a thread about this before the game was released, may be some more information in there.Edited By FeloniousRox on 11/15/06 14:37 |

We (the consumer) should be forewarned of the presence of this type of copy protection scheme before we install.
It should at the very least be printed on the box and then displayed again during the install.
It's not specifically mentioned in the EULA but it's still considered "legal" becuase we accept the license agreement. This is an example of abuse of the EULA.
Installing a software on someones computer and getting away with it sets a precedence. If the community doesn't complain it sets up an inroad for more and more intrusive software to be installed without our permission in the future.
We should not let this happen. All it takes is for enough people to complain. Enough replies to this thread for instance.
I have every sympathy for the software companies and their ever present fight against piracy. I buy my games. I buy games because I'm honest, because I'm not a thief.
I also know that these companies must produce revinue in order to survive and hopefully flourish. We are only going to get the best products from video game companies that can produce games that make money.
I understand fully the need for the use of copy protection but I need to be informed FIRST before something is installed on MY computer without my knowledge.
I've not heard any nightmare stories about Securom in relation to what is still a fiasco for Starforce, but a driver level software is always going to be potentially hazardous, no matter what they say.
Anyway, It's my HDD. I bought a game, I expect a game to be installed and nothing more.
JUST as important, if I uninstall the game the security measure needs to go to. Anything less is sloppy and irresponsible. |

You do realize that other games install SecuROM also? and deleting those files might cause problems in other games. |

There's a petition somewhere on the atari site that you may all want to sign. Hmm... can't seem to find it at the moment, but it had a hell of a lot of support when last I saw it. It's there somewhere, perhaps someone else has a link?
Relying on the CDKey + multiplayer component is so much better than all this ***e anyway... Heck, I'd even take an "activation" method on install over this stuff. _________________ The cake is a lie!! YATT - Yet Another Terrain Tool |

Its nice to see Obsidian/Atari have learned 0 lessons from other succesful companies like Ubisoft, that dumped Starforce for the express purpose that copy protection software such as SecureRom etc, don't do the job they purport to do AND make it harder/more annoying for the consumer to uninstall/remove/turn back the damage caused by said software....or should I say, malware. |

Really? You should do a search for the posts I made.
I may not be as happy about all of it either, but at least I'm not getting a red steaming head and a stroke because of it. _________________ Help. Help. I'm being repressed! |

Like an above poster said, do you people realize that MANY other games use Securom? Securom is the #1 form of copy protection for PC games. If you play any other games chances are VERY good that you already had Securom on your system. |

NWN1 originally also came with SecuROM, and you can be sure that Dragon Age or any other new PC game from Bioware will also come with a copy protection.
Anyway, SecuROM is a harmless copy protection with very little danger potential (other than that a game might not run). Unlike Starforce, it won't jeopardize anyone's computer/Windows; and unlike Starforce, it doesn't hide in the shadows, either. It can also be removed easily enough if someome doesn't play any SecuROM games anymore (it's a common copy protection, though). How that works is explained at the bottom of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecuROM
I understand that some people are frustrated with some issues they have with NWN2, but I don't understanding jumping at every opportunity to bash the game. |

What exactly does this mean? Are they replacing the windows drivers the same way that starforce did?
I never brought a starforce game and I wouldn't have ordered NWN2 if I knew that's what they're doing.
I pay a lot of money for windows. I'd rather not have it's system repleaced in any way - small or large - as that in it self can cause performance and security issues.
anyone got a link to some information about what it really does? Have they taken a page out of starforces book? _________________ After my experience installing SoU and playing ToEE all I can say is…

No, SecuROM does not work like Starforce. It does not replace or install any "hardware" drivers. I'd not buy a Starforce game, but SecuROM is harmless as far as CPs go. Publishers feel that copy protections are a necessarily evil (it causes them more headaches than people realise, I think), and while it can be argued that they err in their views, if they feel they must use a CP system, then SecuROM is one of the least unpleasant approaches. See the link in my post above yours for some details. Also, as I said, NWN1 *also* came with SecuROM before Bioware patched it out after several updates (but not initially -- and it's the first few weeks that are important to publishers). |
