For Partitioned or Multiple Hard Drives

Neverwinter Nights 2 makes use of the My Documents and the Windows Temp File Directories to hold your saved games, hak files, exported character files, temp files needed during game play, updates and more.

Computer owners sometimes partion their hard drives into two or more drives to keep the Operating system isolated from the rest of their software but may end up leaving themselves short on disk space.

The reason they may quickly run out of disk space on the "Bootable" drive or partition (usually Drive C:\) is that, by default, Windows places all user files and folders, including temporary files, for each separate user on that same drive, along with the operating system.

Newer software installations are also using this space, even though the user may install a program on a different hard drive or drive partition, as well as the Operating System, Antivirus, Defender, and other programs that recieve automatic updates, which can very quickly fill up the what little remaining disk space was left available.

a. In the User variables list, select the TEMP variable, and then click Edit.

a. In the System variables list, select the TEMP variable, and then click Edit.
b. In the Variable value box, type %drive%\TEMP, and then click OK.
c. Repeat steps a and b for the TMP variable.

7. Click OK two times to close the System Properties dialog box.

Note %drive% is the local drive where you created the folder in step 1.

Port Forwarding for Hosting NWN2

If you wish to host a game, you must set up port forwarding on your router/firewall configurations depending on the configuration you are using.

In Windows XP with only a Cable Modem, no router:

While I have not used this method, it seems straight forward enough for opening the appropriate ports for hosting NWN 2.

1. Open Windows Firewall and select the "Exceptions" tab.

2. Click the "Add Port" button.

3. In the name field for the "Add a Port" form, enter a name for your application; In chart 1, I use the naming convention N2 followed by a sequence number that reads as N201 so that I know it is NWN 2 and is my first port entry for NWN 2.

4. For Port number, use the port number listed in Chart 1 Below under "Start"

5. For the Protocol, Shown as Radio Buttons as TCP or UDP, Select TCP or UDP as appropriate fo the port under "Protocol" in chart 1.

6. Click the "Okay" button on the "Add a Port" form.

7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 until all the required ports are opened.

Note: For other Firewall Applications, plese see the documentation for your Firewall settngs.

Chart 1: Port Numbers

Port Range Forwarding with a Router

Most routers use a similar means of opening ports referred to as Port Forwarding. However, the router identifies the specific IP address of the computer being used to host a game, such as NWN 2. Chart 2 below is based on a Linksys BEFSR41v4 router and is similar for most other routers.

To set up portforwarding for games or other applications, open your router administration interface; usually via a web page built into the router's firmware.

For example: http://192.168.1.100 will open the login screen for administering my router from my local network (not accessible via internet).

Open the Application & Gaming administration section for your router and fill in the appropriate information for each port.

Note: The IP address used will be the *static* IP address of your computer; Check your TCP/IP settings for your network card and ensure that the IP address is manually entered rather than dynamically set by DCHP. See your help files for setting up your IP address.

Once you complete filing in the the appropriate port settings and IP address for your host computer, save your settings, which will likely require your router be restarted.

Chart 2: Port Range Forwarding

App = Application Name

Start = Starting port number for port range forwarding.

Protocol = Protocols allowed across the port. For most routers this can be set to TCP, UDP, or Both

IP Address = Static IP address of the computer hosting the game.




My local Port Range Forwarding configuration:

I use a Linksys BEFSR41v4 Router and under the Applications and Gaming tab in the router administration tools, I have set up port range forwarding on my router a little differently.

Because I have a NWN 1 PW Server and I also enjoy hosting NWN 2 OC sessions, I have had to take a slightly different approach to setting up Port Forwarding. The reason for the slight differences is that NWN 1 and NWN 2 both use Ports 5120 (client) and 5121 (server), which would create a conflict and one server would override the other.

Therefore, I have set up my Port Forwarding Ranges as follows and have set the Protocols to Both (TCP and UDP) and have set up my NWN 2 ports to the 5220 vs. the 5120 range of NWN 1.

Patch 1.10 and MotB


Camera Edge Scrolling Settings for mouse:

In Character Mode:

Check: Turn Camera on hitting edge of screen is on

In Strategy Mode:

Control:

Check: Turn Camera on hitting edge of screen is on

Check: Scroll Camera on hitting edge of screen is on

Camera Focus:

Check: Directly on controlled character is on.
This one is bold because it seems to be the one detail folks seem to miss.

Note: After making the changes, switch back and forth between Strategy Mode and Character Mode using the * key on the numeric keypad to make sure your settings were saved.


Camera Speed Settings:

I did a little testing on my own game and made some changes that give me better speed control over the screen edge scrolling and mousewheel zoom speeds, which worked well for my system.

Find your nwn2player.ini file in your My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2 folder.

Make a backup first!

Make a backup of your nwn2player.ini file and store it in a safe place (simply copy it to another folder). Then, In your nwn2player.ini file, make the following changes:

Under Character Mode Options

Change

Edge_Turn_Min=3.000000

to

Edge_Turn_Min=1.000000



Under Strategy Mode Options:

Change

Mousewheel_Speed_Min=11.000000

To

Mousewheel_Speed_Min=1.000000


Change

Once you make those changes, save the file and try it. You will likely have to go into Options menu and re-adjust your speeds. I hope this helps.

First:

It should be noted that this particular bug has been fixed with the release of Patch 1.12 on March 19, 2008.

Second:

I have tested the update on a bugged saved game and I can verify that the update will NOT repair a saved game that had become corrupted prior to the release and installation of 1.12. Therefore, this post will remain for those who have as yet to patch their game to the latest update or may choose not to...

Since the 1.07Beta and the 1.10 patches, as well as the release of MotB, a couple of problems may seem to be more common. However, these are not new problems caused primarily by the recent patches nor the expansion, they have only been made more visible.

Apparently, a slight modification was done to the AI where the arcane classes, along with Druids and Rangers will, by default, automatically summons their appropriate Familiars or Animal Companions. Unfortunately these summoned critters are a problem when attempting to pass through transitions, either by player selection on the world map, or scripted as part of a conversation.

Some of the symptoms that may occur are Companions, such as Khelgar or Neeshka, may suddenly be replaced by Qara's familiar on the other side of the transition. In some cases, the game may hang or crash during or after a transition, or a conversation may not trigger on the other side of a transition.

One other thing that has been noted in a few posts is that it seems that if you lasso the party together using the Marquee function to move them all with the mouse and attempt a transition that similar issues of failure to transition, and may be an issue if you are using a Companion to initiate a transition. This can be avoided by selecting your PC before making any transitions.

The below isn't a cure for the cause of problem, but is a means of recovering from and/or avoiding the problem of missing Companions until such time as OEI can get a handle on fixing things.

I don't know if people would notice a sticky any more than these numerous posts, but it definitely appears as though a lot of people are getting hit with this problem since patch 1.10.

For those that don't know, since at least patch 1.06, summoning familiars/animal companions can cause NPCs (such as Khelgar, Neeshka, etc.) to vanish completely from the party upon an area transition. They are no longer found in the dialog boxes that ask you who you want in your party, and they are basically missing from the game forever. Furthermore, this breaks cut scenes that require those characters (such as Khelgar in the Rite of Tyr).

There are two known ways to fix this problem once it occurs:

1) Revert back to a save made before the problem happened.

2) Some people have claimed that replacing the "ROS" file of the missing companion will fix the problem. I cannot personally vouch for this, but here's how it is done: On Windows, saved games are by default under My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\Saves\. The ROS files are named something like "ROS-khelgar.ros" depending on the companion in question. Find such a file with the name of the missing companion from a saved game where the companion is functioning normally, and copy it into the troubled save game directory (overwrite an existing file if any). Make a backup first. I do not know if this procedure has any side effects, but people on these boards have claimed it has restored their companions.

To prevent this bug from occurring, do the following:

1) Go into the Behaviors tab of all spellcasting companions (Wizards, Druids, Rangers, etc.) and turn OFF the "Use Ability" option. Do this for your main character too, if your PC is a class that has such a summon. Otherwise, as soon as you switch to a companion to give him a command or something, your PC will summon his familiar.

2) Do not summon familiars/animal companions manually.

3) If someone has summoned his familiar or animal companion, switch to the character who owns the familiar/animal, hold down the right mouse button on the familiar/animal (either its portrait or in the game world should work), and select "Unsummon" from the right-click menu. (In theory, you could play with familiars out until you need to switch areas, then unsummon them right before the transition... but I wouldn't recommend it.)

Note 1: This bug was not introduced in patch 1.10 but it was exacerbated by the patch because in 1.10 companions on AI now auto-summon familiars/animals.

Note 2: Some things that may also be an issue and causing crashes during transitions could be EAX settings (Sound Drivers), using Companions to initiate transitions, grouped characters (using lasso) transitioning, characters grouped and triggering a conversations or a scripted conversation event.

Note 3: Restoring the missing NPC from a previous saved game ROS file may restore the missing companion, there have been issues such as missing gear, etc, and sometimes problems with the affected familiar whose image and avatar may have replaced the missing NPC.

Note 4: Sometimes, manually transfering the party from one area to another via the console (no, I don't know all the various console commands) can help get around transition issues. Using the console, however, may mask a problem temporarily and does not correct anything if the saved game is corrupted.

Note 5: Files in your override folder can also cause transition problems and a host of many other problems. Try removing the override files from your "My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\override" folder. The biggest issue here are the .2da files which can cause unpredictable errors if they are not updated to match the current version of the game you are playing. It is important to remember that the override folder is intended for module builders and designers to test ideas and is not intended for regular game play.

One last thing I will add: If you wish to use your familiars and animal companions, you can summon them manually, but you will need to remember to un-summon them prior to making any transitions or you may end up bitten by this particular bug.

Just for information regarding the missing companion bug...

If your saved game is already affected by the 'Missing Companion' bug as discussed in in this post, please don't expect that patch 1.12 to automatically fix those saved games.

The reason I say this is because a game update tends to fix the root cause of the problem and does not go through your saved games to repair those bugs; Once your saved games are affected by the bug, the bug remains in your saved games, no matter what patch you use, because what you are dealing with is file corruption, rather than a core game system mechanic.

When you load a saved game, the data stored in your saved game is what is used to continue playing where you left off; if those saved game files are corrupted, they will likely remain corrupted.

Logically, there is no way for Obsidian to determine the file names you would possibly use for your saved games for repairing them, therefore, it cannot be expected that any patch would be able to debug any saved games already affected by some bugs; especially since all the data variables for your saved game are stored in the saved game and not in the core portion of the game, and those saved game files are not accessed during the update process. A corrupt game file is a corrupt game file and you will either need to go back to a saved game point prior to the corruption of the game files or start over.

Is Your Video Card Supported?

* Laptop/Notebook device drivers are not as frequently updated to address graphical and/or game-specific issues compared to desktop video cards. In addition, device drivers are usually tailored specifically to a particular laptop/notebook by the manufacturer working closely with the chip maker compared to desktop video card device drivers being created for the chip itself.

* Laptop/Notebook graphics chipsets are designed for low power consumption and generally use a small amount of embedded RAM, using system RAM to make up any differences. Comparatively, desktop video cards in general have a larger amount of embedded RAM and do not resort to using system RAM.

* With some exceptions, such as the Radeon Mobility 9200 or GeForce FX Go 5200, notebook "3D" graphics chips do not support the advanced OpenGL and Direct3D features that have become standard on desktop 3D video cards.

* The simplistic audio chip in notebooks is designed for basic multimedia functions like playing music CDs or business presentations. The standard audio for games is Microsoft DirectSound. DirectSound requires a high-performance sound architecture that is able to do real-time mixing of multiple sound samples.

However, all of this aside, here are some laptop/notebook video chipsets that should work with titles requiring a 128MB Hardware T&L video card or higher:

Multiplayer Login Tutorial

Following are instructions for connecting to a multiplayer game or Persistent World server. I am placing them in the General forum since many of the multiplayer community members have not registered their game.

Connecting to a PW/Multiplayer Server

1. Launch Neverwinter Nights 2

2. On the main menu, choose Multiplayer

3. If you have not logged in before, choose "Create New Account" and fill out the form. The "Bioware Community Name" that you choose will also create an account for you in the NWN2 forums. Click OK when done.

4. If you have already created an account, enter your username and password. Click "Sign In" when done.

5. Click "Join Internet Game"

6. Browse through the servers by choosing different Game Types. Make sure to wait a second or two after you choose a different game type, so that the list has time to load.

7. Click on a server that interests you. You can sort by any field listed by clicking on its name. For example, to sort by # of players online, click "Players" up top.

8. Download the required files for the server that interests you. Details on how to do this are below.

9. Click "Connect"

10. Make your character, and start playing!


Downloading Required Files

Before you can play on the server, you must first download the files that server requires. Please be aware that some servers do have automatic installers and other solutions for properly installing the needed files. If a web site provides you with specific instructions for installing or setting up, always follow those instructions instead of these.

To do this:

1. Click the button labeled "Server Details" and find the address in one of three places:

a) Check first in the "PWC Download" field. If an address is present, you can click on it to receive the information you need for file downloads. (Not all servers have this information.)

b) If you there is no address in the "PWC Download" field, look next in "Module Website"

c) Finally, if neither of the above fields are filled, look at the Server Description field for a web site address.

2. Go to the web site listed. From there, you will usually find a clearly identified link for required downloads.

3. Download any needed files. They will typically be presented as a list of files. Note that some servers will require you to register at their web site before providing you with the needed files.

4. Extract the files. Most places will provide the files to you in a compressed format, so that they can be downloaded faster. For files ending in ".7z" or ".rar", or ".tar.gz", you can extract them using WinRar. If the file ends in .zip, or if Windows lists it as a "Compressed Folder", you can open it directly without installing anything else. Some servers do not give files in compressed format. . If the file does not end in ".rar", ".7z", ".zip" or ".tar.gz", then it has not been compressed. You can proceed directly to the next step without worrying about extracting the files first.

5. Install the needed files. Here is a general guide showing where different files go -- remember that not all servers use all of these different types of files. The only thing that all servers will require is the "PWC" file.

a) Files ending in PWC go in My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\pwc

b) Files ending in TLK go in My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\tlk

c) Files ending in HAK go in My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\hak

d) If the file ingamegui.ini is included, it must be placed in My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\ui\default

6. Special files

a) Some servers will have Campaign files. The Campaign files must go in a folder within My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\Campaigns. The folder name to use will be provided to you -- usually it can be found in the information on the server's download page.

b) Some servers will have files that must be placed in Override. Extract these files into My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\Override. Always remember that placing files in override can have unpredictable results, especially if you play on other servers, play other single player modules, or are still playing the official campaign.

Common Questions

Q. There is no web site listed in server details. Where do I get the downloads from?

A. Unfortunately, unless the server admin has provided you with the location of the downloads, you can't play on this server. You might try locating the web site by searching the web for the server name.


Q. There is a web site, but I can't find the files on it anywhere.

A. This is all too common. The best thing you can do is email the server administrator, explain that you could not find the downloads, and politely request that they direct you to the server downloads page.

Q. The server description is cut off. I can't see the full web site!

A. Unfortunately, many server admins don't seem to be aware that there is a limit to size of the Description field. Unless you can find the web site and file downloads through other means (such as searching for the server web on the web), you will not be able to join this server.

Q. What are these fields "Module Website" and "PWC File" for? Wouldn't that be easier than having to type in the web site myself?

A. If the server admin has set their server up properly, these fields will contain the web site of the server, and sometimes a link directly to the file you need to download. Currently, this only works if a server is in your History list, or your Favorites list. It will work from the main browser with a future patch.

Q. What is a PWC file?

A. This file contains the map information for the server that you are trying to connect to.

Q. When I download the PWC file, I have the whole module?

A. No. You have only the minimum files needed in order to log into a server. You don't have the creatures, items,scripts, and other resources that make up a server.

Q . When I look at the server list, some servers are red, and some servers are grey. What does this mean?

A. Red servers require a password to log in. You will most likely need to register at that server's web site in order to receive the password and download the needed files. Grey servers are running a different patch level than you have. This happens most commonly soon after a beta patch is released (some servers upgrade early); and after a final patch is released (some servers are slow to upgrade).

Q. I made a character and tried to log in, but was immediately sent back to the main menu! What do I do? or

A. If either of these two things happens, this means that you have have not installed this module's PWC file. Refer to section titled Downloading Required Files for details on downloading and installing this file and others that you may need.

Q.After making a character and trying to log in, I received an error message: "Could not Load the Module: Missing Required HAK File" . What do I do? or

A. You must visit the server's web site, and download and install the require HAK or TLK file(s) before you can connect to it. Instructions for that are in section Downloading Required Files

I'm finally logged in -- now what?

A. Some things that can help you get started:
- movement is the same as it is in the single player

- to speak out loud to people, hit the "enter" key then begin typing your message. When you're done, hit the "enter" key again.

- the starting areas of many worlds include signposts and NPCs that you can speak to in order to learn more about the world. If such resources are available, you can often learn a lot by taking the time to explore them.

- always respect the posted rules of the world you're visiting. If you find them to be too restrictive, there are many other worlds out there for you to explore.

Basic Hosting The OC or MotB via Internet Using your computer:

Before attempting to host the game for the first time, you will need to set up Port Forwarding for your system for others to be able to join in. Please see Post 2 . Also see Post 6 for Port Forwarding details.

1. Launch NWN

2. Click on "Multi-PLayer"

3. Enter your BioWare Community Name

4. Enter you password (or create New Account if you don't have a Bioware Community Account).

5. Click on "Sign In"

6. To launch a new game (starting from the beginning with either the OC or MotB), Click on "New Game", to launch a saved game from a previous Multiplayer session, click on "Load Game". The Server Info form wil appear on the screen.

7. Setting up your server info...

7a. Enter a Server Name

7b. Enter a password that will be required by players if a closed game in the Player Password field. Don't forget to let your fellow players know what the password will be.

7c. Enter a DM Password, even though you may not have a DM.

7d. Enter a Server Admin password, even though you don't need a server admin.

7e. Select as desired for PvP; None, Party, or Full.

7f. Set Max players to 4

7g. Set Level Range to be from 1 > 20 for the OC, from 1 > 30 for MotB

7h. Select "Game Type", most tend to use "Team" for team play of the OC/MotB though some of us use "Role Play".

7i. Set the Server Port to 5121, or what ever number you used in your Port Forwarding setup on your router for the server's, your computer, port. See
Post 6 for details.

7j. Either check or uncheck Item Level Restrictions as desired.

7k. Either check or uncheck Player Pausing as desired.

7l. Either check or uncheck Enforce Legal Characters as desired.

7m. Either check or uncheck Allow local characters as desired. Note: Allow local characters permits a player to bring his or her own character from their own local vault to play. Unchecking this box forces the players to create and use a character in the host computer's server vault.

7n. Check Only One Party. The OC and MotB only allows a single party of characters.

7o. Check Post Game to Internet. If this is unchecked, it means for use on a Local Area Network (LAN).

7p. Click "Next"

7q. Click "New Campaign"

7r. Select Neverwinter Nights 2 or Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer by clicking on the Campaign name

7s. Click "Start Campaign"

At this point, the new campaign should start and offer the host to create a new character, select an existing character, or to cancel. Either create a new character or select your character from the list an, when done, the game will start just as it does with NWN 2. You need only wait for your friends to join in with you to begin playing.

The same applies to loading and existing game, but once the initial setups have been made, you whouldn't have to set them up again.

Unlike the Single-player mode of play, the game will not Auto-save at specific points and it is up to the host to save the game manually through the options.

MotB Installation Note: Please follow the information in the MotB Installation Instructions Posted by Rob McGinnis.

Digital download users are advised to install and play the NWN 2 OC a few minutes prior to running updates. If installing MotB, install and run MoTB a few minutes prior to running the updates. If installing both NWN 2 and MoTB, install the oc and play a few minutes, then install MoTB and play a few minutes prior to updating.

If you decide to uninstall and reinstall NWN 2 before installing MotB, follow the uninstall instructions below for uninstalling, then follow Rob's instructions in the above link.

Installation in a Nutshell

1. Disable anti virus/malware applications and software-based firewalls (including Windows Firewall). If re-installing, make sure there are no folders or files left from a previous installation of NWN 2 and the related expansions

2. Install NWN 2 (OC); DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Launch NWN 2 after completing the install and play through the first conversation, then exit the game (required for those using digital download versions, recommended for everyone). If not installing the expansions, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

3. Install MoTB: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. If not installing SoZ, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

4. Install SoZ: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

Note: The preferred and recommended method of updating NWN 2 is by use of NWUpdate, which is accessed from the NWN 2 Start Up menu. NWUpdate will automatically download and install the appropriate updates for NWN 2, even from a fresh or new install. The manual options given below are for cases where users do not have access to the Internet with their game computer.

Manually Updating NWN 2 from 1.00.788 to 1.05.912

For NWN 2 only, no single update or patch contains all the fixes and tweaks available for previous patches, many may only have the most recent update for a new install or re-install of NWN 2 at the time the update was released.

This may result in incomplete updates as what is included in some previous patches may not be included in a more recent patch and may seemingly produce new glitches and bugs, or seem to re-introduce bugs that were fixed in an earlier patch.

Until such is available to sequencially install all patches sequencially or all patches include complete fixes provided in previous patches, the following method works well and lists the minimum patches required for a fresh install or re-install of NWN 2 to version 1.05 manually.

Note: The following instructions are specifically for the English version of the original NWN 2 release (not the Gold or subsequent release of NWN 2 or expansions), but you can go to the site via the Official Patch link in my sig and use the appropriate language patches for your specific installation. In those cases, the patches may not be exactly the same, but be sure to patch appropriately between the "from" and "to" to patch versions.

Note that you can download and store the patches from that site and keep a copy in a safe location so that you will not need to download them again in the future. These can be found on the Neverwinter Nights 2 Vault (most complete version) or in the links I provided below and in my signature.

To uninstall and re-install NWN 2, use the following steps:

1. Copy any files in your My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2 hak, local vault, modules, and saves folder to a non-NWN 2 folder for safe keeping. Also copy your nwncdkey.ini file from the install directory; C:\Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2 to a safe place as well for reference as it contains your CD Key information.

2. From the Control Panel, run the Add or Remove Programs utility and remove Neverwinter Nights 2.

3. After removing Neverwinter Nights 2, delete the folders (in bold) if they remain:

3a. My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2

3b. C:\Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2

4. Restart the computer

5. Prior to re-installing NWN 2 this would be a great time to defragment your hard drive and is highly recommended.

6a. Re-install NWN 2; Disable your anti-virus programs prior to installing or patching NWN 2 and MotB.

6b. DO NOT patch the game at this time (critical for Digital Download users and recommended for other new or re-installed games).

7. Launch NWN 2 and play while unpatched for a few minutes, save your game, then shut down NWN 2.

Important Note: If installing MotB, stop here and skip to the MotB Installation Instructions provided by Rob McGinnis. If installing only the OC, continue with step 8.

If installing MoTB (Digital Downloads): Follow the same directions as above for installing the OC (steps 6a, 6b, and 7) prior to running the auto updater to update the game.

After installing MotB, update the game using the auto updater; it is not recommended that you use manual update information provided below and is only provided for installing NWN 2 OC under specific conditions as previously indicatd.

[c] If installing SoZ, do not update MoTB, simply play MoTB long enough to see the first conversation, then install SoZ. Update after installing SoZ.

8. Launch the NWN 2 Loader and select the "Update" option and allow it to update patch NWUpdate to version 1.08 or higher (version is shown in the bottom-left corner of the NWUpdate window).

However, DO NOT allow NWUpdate to patch the game from 1.00.788 to 1.05.912. The reason I say this is that some patches do not include data provided in previous patches and may re-introduce bugs that have been previously fixed.

So, for the time being, follow the below instructions for manually patching NWN 2.


Manual Patching English version files and sequence for new installation or re-installation up to version 1.05.912 using NWUpdate:

Copy the below linked patches to your Neverwinter Nights 2 install directory, which is normally C:\Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2 by default; DO NOT UNZIP the files when using this update method):

Patch from 100788 to 104860

Patch from 104860 to 104870

Patch from 104870 to 105910

Patch from 105910 to 105912

After copying those files to the appropriate folder mentioned above, disable your Internet connection (you can simply disconnect your data cable or terminate your MODEM connection to the Internet).

Launch NWN 2 and select the "Update" Option and make sure that NWUpdate (not the game) has been updated to 1.08 or higher. If it is not at the correct version, go back to step 8 above.

If NWUpdate is at the correct version, 1.08 or higher, select the "Update" button. You will get an error concerning the Internet patch not being available, but let it continue as it will automatically check the path where Neverwinter Nights 2 is installed for the patches.

If things go well, it will patch each one, but it will require that you manually re-start the updater for each of the patches, even if you place them all in the Neverwinter Nights 2 folder at the same time.

Note: This only discusses patching the English version of NWN 2 to 1.05.912, but can be used for other languages by using the similarly named patch appropriate for the language desired.

Note: You may also use this method to patch only as far as you wish to update to, such as stopping at a particular update such as 1.04. You can also download all the patches and patch only as far as you wish. The information otherwise given above is for the minimum patches.

Please check this post regularly as I will be working to keep this post updated to reflect any changes or recommendations made by OEI and Community members.


NWN 2 Gold CD Key Problems?

Try this solution provided by rdm180 in this bit of information posted at Click Here :

Having Problems Uninstalling?

Try this trick from fellow Community Member Alasaari:

Characters Won't Follow

I don't know why, nor can I reproduce the bug at will, but in some cases Companions simply seem to stop following automatically.

There are some instances where the Companions are given a 'Stand your Ground' command, such as at the Sunken Flagon, and others where a player may accidentally disable the AI functions. However, there are a couple of things you can try to get the Companions moving again...

AI Inactive:
Check to see if the AI icon, the smallish and right most icon attached to the large Options icon in the bottom left of of your screen, has a blue or red background. If it is blue, it means that AI is active. If it is red, it means the AI is turned off. Left-click on it to change the setting to blue (AI On).

Puppet Mode:
In the character sheets for your Companions, select the "Behavior" tab and see if the companions are in Puppet mode. Turn Puppet Mode off if it is on.

Restarting AI:

Broadcast Commands:
You can use broadcast commands to tell your party or individual Companions to take limited actions, such as Attack, Follow, or Halt.

To give commands to a single party member:

Right-click on the character's portrait (or the character) until the menu pops up. From that menu select the broadcast command option, then select the 'Follow me' option.

To broadcast commands to all Companions at once:

The Voice Chat (Emote) menu also contains broadcast commands, which are indicated by an asterisk (*). To activate the menu, press the letter v as you would any other mapped key function. When the menu opens, you will see various selectable options identified by a letter, each having a sub-menu of actions available. The options can be selected by using typing the letters in sequence or left-clicking on them with the mouse.

You can drill through the menus with the mouse, press the appropriate letter sequence to issue a broadcast command, or you can drag and drop the voice command icon into a quick slot for easy access.

To issue commands via keystroke, simply tap the letter v so that Voice Command (Emotes) menu appears. The three broadcast commands that I use most when I want to handle the whole party to do something as a group are:

Halt (Stand your ground): v w x
Follow me: v e e
Attack: v w e


Re-select Your Party
One thing that sometimes works, when other options, fail is to remove all of the Companions as is possible from your party and transition to another area, such as is possible from the Sunken Flagon when you exit there and are given the option to change party members. Return to the area that gives you the option to change your characters and select the party members you wish to have with you and transition again, then see if the Companions follow properly.

Vista Issues:


Toolset Issues

There are a couple of issues regarding Vista and running the Toolset that I have seen discussed in the forums;

Missing text/menu options in the toolset:

Providing your game is patched and up to date, text should not be missing. However, the visual themes used in Vista can cause issues with the toolset that can be corrected for by disabling visual themes for the NWN2ToolsetLauncher.exe file; to do this:

1. Locate the NWN2ToolsetLauncher.exe, rightclick on the file name, and select "Properties" from the option menu, which will open the Properties tool for NWN2ToolsetLauncher.exe.

2. Select the Compatibility tab in the Properties tool and click to check the check box for "Disable visual themes".

3. Click "OK" to close the Properties tool, then see if that helps resolve your issue.


Toolset fails to start or crashes shortly after starting:

From what I have seen for Vista Users, the below linked version of DirectX seems to resolve some of the issues folks have been having with the Toolset. Note that this version does contain the redistributable version of DirectX:

Reporting Bugs

One thing we can do better as a community to help out with resolving bugs is to make better use of the NWN 2: Technical Support (Self-Help) forums and to submit bug reports to nwn2bugs@obsidian.net.

The way to make better use of the Tech Support (Self-Help) forums is to provide the kind of information asked for such as system specs. For reporting bugs to Obsidian, a full description of the issue found, identify the frequency in which a given bug can be reproduced, any circumstances that may be affecting things (such as custom content and other issues the player may be having with the game at the same time), conditions under which the bug can be reproduced, etc.

Here is a summary of the kinds of things commonly asked for when participating in a beta, and would be helpful when submitting a bug report to nwn2bugs@obsidian.net :

DESCRIPTION: Whenever I make an area transition while controlling a companion, the game will crash. This crash only seems to occur during area transitions and I have never seen it happen during a module transition. Also, this only happens when I am controlling a companion. Using an area transition while controlling my player character will never cause a crash. The game almost always crashes while the loading bar is about half full.


Make sure that you are as descriptive as possible. This cannot be stressed enough. When Developers get a bug report that is not very descriptive, it makes it almost impossible for them to fully investigate it.

With good information, bug reporting from the Community can help the Developers greatly in resolving issues without us being formal participants in a beta, but by being active in the Tech Support (Self-Help) forums.
