To be absolutely clear on this point: This is not the summon familiar + transition problem. This one's different.
Anyway. In the tutorial, Amie uses Summon Creature I, as per the request, to win the magic portion of the Harvest Fair. When I go to do this, Amie will begin casting the spell, a *poof* is heard, and when one expects to see the dire badger, the game crashes. The badger never appears; the game always crashes just before this occurs. How can I fix this issue, and is there a way to ensure that familiars and summoned creatures don't always cause the game to crash?
Game Version: 1.22.1588 Game Language: English Retail or Digital: Retail DVD Processor Manufacturer: Intel Processor Type: Pentium Processor Speed: 3.00 Ghz Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP3 System RAM: 4 gigs Video Card Manufacturer: ATI Video Card Model: Radeon HD 2400 AGP Video Card RAM: 512 megs Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst 6.10 Sound Card Manufacturer: SoundMAX Sound Card Model: Audio Blaster Sound Card Driver Version: (unknown, not causing the problem)
In a nutshell, I manually summon a creature, the game goes to display said creature, but does not and crashes to desktop with "Neverwinter Nights 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close". Finally, I have checked the override folders as well. Not a thing in there. On the other hand, a clean install would be a pain (getting patched again, ugh), so I hope there's just something simple I'm overlooking. All help is appreciated, and I certainly hope this issue is resolvable.Edited By Rydash2 on 06/06/09 02:40 |

As I continue to test this problem, it seems no other spells are crashing the game. I have a theory, but I'm not sure if it is valid or fixable. Maybe, when summoned, the game tries to set the summoned creature as the controlled character. Seeing as only PCs have stats and things, the game aborts itself. I'm unsure if this is even possible, but it's the only theory I have. If there is a fix or a resolution to this (I'm still toying with the idea of a clean install), please let me know. Thank you sincerely. |

All theories are good until proven false , but this is certainly not what is normally supposed to happen in the game. Reinstalling could help, yes, but it does not guarantee it will solve it, either.
Before reinstalling I would also try disabling all antimalware apps on the computer while playing this part. Defragging the hard drive wouldn’t hurt either. In addition to it Catalyst drivers and ATI Catalyst Control Centre can cause weird problems sometimes. Maybe it’s not the case here but check if disabling the ATI CCC or changing some options in it won’t help you with this issue.
Besides: do you have the NET Framework updated to 3.5 and DX 9.0c installed on your machine? They are known to cause problems too, although different ones that you’ve reported... |

Amie should not be summoning a dire badger, and if that is what you have been seeing, perhaps there are more issues with your install; she should be summoning a wolf for her 1st level summons spell.
Hae you made any kind of modifications to the game, such as custom spells or installed any other type of custom content overrides?Edited By Selene Moonsong on 06/07/09 17:27 |

Perhaps I was confused about what Amie summons (A wolf does seem to be right, not sure why I said badger. :/ The spell picture does indicate a wolf, thank you). I have not yet upgraded to .NET framework 3.5 so that may help. I'd be happy to fiddle with the Catalyst Control Center (or disable it) and I'll see if I have any anti-malware apps running. My only concern is that it probably isn't JUST this part that this is likely to occur in, but I am unsure. Thank you for the good ideas, I'll try them as soon as I can and hope that it works. |

Okay, I disabled my anti-malware (AVG Free 8.5), and CCC, but no luck. Then, I de-fragmented the drive, but still no luck. Finally, I plan to install .NET framework 3.5 later on, but beyond that I have no idea what could be causing this or what to do other than a fresh install. Thanks for the help, any more offered solutions would be generously accepted. |

Okay, I found no pinpoint fix to the problem (.NET framework 3.5 did not help), but after a fresh install, the issue has been resolved (with the game at v1.20, at least.) I appreciated the help, but I wish there was a more simple way to know what causes this, in case others have this problem... |

Glad to hear you solved the problem. Although I am really curious what causes this issue, too. Maybe simply something went wrong during your previous game installation, it happens from time to time. But if you were to update to 1.22 let us know if it changes anything. And good luck with your game. |

Maybe you used an old mod (or had an old file that did not get updated) which changes the party bar (where you see the heads of your party members).
At one point Obsidian added drawn portraits to the game, and if you used an old version of partybar.xml the game would crash when a party member (such as a summoned animal) would be added. |

I did have two older mods on here when I asked my question. So, that is a plausible explanation. I've upgraded to v1.22 and have not seen my issue occur again. I'm glad things are fixed, thank you all very much for the time and help. |
