We're using two haks on PW "L'ile Magique", we didn't get more errors than when we were not usings them. And those haks are pretty huge (+2000 files and 400 MB of data).

The client crashs i encouter are often caused by packets loss & packets corruption.

Observed results of packet loss/corruption :

-PC pickup an object but don't see it in his inventory
-Crash at transitions
-Switching weapons and still have the old weapons stat
-Bonus Abilites counted as natural abilitis (that cause PC to be saved as invalid character on the vault)
-Crash when opening the map on screen (Mostly for DM when getting invalid PC information because it is unsync)
-Not seeing some other PC
-Crash of the client

That was make me asking if NWN2 netcode has handcheck protocol in the transmition of upd packets ?

i dunno if it's feasible, but a simple messagebox saying "nwn2 was unable to correctly load that area.. would you like to try again" would already be a great improvement.
instead of just crashing.
Loading the game is quite a pain so if ou get to do it 10 times a night... well, you get somewhat bored..
(i just dunno how players endure this, but actually, they do sometime give nwn2 a try 10 time a night... hail to them !)

Agreed.

But sometime when you are unsync if your are trying to use a transition your game get you back to the main menu without crashing, displaying you the loading error message. The one you get when your don't have the PWC appropriate for the PW

Hello, Im a DM on the server The Forgotten Realms. Our server is usually around 50-60 players during peak hours. However, we've been experiencing random crashing.

Random Server Crashes -- We think we have located a cause!

Haks, Overrides and Server Instability ...

We have done alot of testing and searching in recent months to locate the cause of the seemingly random crashes that we suffer here at The Forgotten Realm and we beleive that we have found a cause of the majority of crashes.

We have a found a direct link to the installation of Haks and Overrides on client machines and the frequency of crashes on our server. We know specifically that certain overrides to the NWN2 2da's relating to Races, Classes, Feats, and Skills are causing crashes at various times - like during level up of some character classes.

This also explains the randomness with which the crashes seem to occur. We can go many hours without a crash, or suffer three or more in rapid succession.

It is imperative that players remove any haks and overrides that you may have installed before you login to The Forgotten Realm. We do not use haks / overrides for the very simple fact that they do cause instability issues. We did not immediately realize that simply having them installed on the client side would also cause instability as well.

We are currently looking into a means of 'checking' client side for haks / overrides as a means to ensure server stability for everyone.

Thanks for your co-operation.

So, haks from other servers cause issues?

We have fixed the override issue and hope to have that in 1.07.

We're learning now that its only overrides.

i wanted to know if any other PWs are still having issues with transition crashes. the reason why im asking is because of something one of our builders/scripters found when examining an area.

****************

#1 The ****** entrance is too narrow. Noticed many people just going afk outside so they can stay safe from NPCs. That or they just block the entrance/path through the wall so NPCs won't be able to reach their healers etc.

#2 The ******* entrance is too narrow. Caused 2 or 3 server crashes just by spawning 4 or 5 creatures next to the entrance. - bang - disconnected.

#3 The enemies/NPCs on the ****** are too slow. People just abuse this to kite them around in circles while nuking/shooting at them or just to keep them busy so the rest of the group has to fight 2 or 3 enemies max.

Solution: Move the spawn/zone point inside the cemetery and make the entrance impassable. Increase run speed of enemies.

****************

Im trying to get our dev to also increase the spawning time for creatures. Therefore making the creatures re-spawn time take much longer to re-appear. This will help reduce farming.

Transition Crash While Possessing Familiar
When a PC is possessing his familiar and a DM transitions him to a new zone the client crashes. Thankfully PCs are unable to transition while possessing their own familiars.

Transition Crash While VFX on Weapon is visible.
While playing on the Legends of Arcadia( www.legendsofarcadia.com ) server I started experiencing transition crashes. I didn't know what the problem was. I tried all the solutions on the Self-Help but none of the solutions there helped. Finally, the quarterstaff I was carrying I noticed had a flaming spell effect on it. From which spell I'm not sure, however once I sold the quarterstaff my transition crashes ended. I then purchased a new quarterstaff to see if it was the item itself or the VFX of the spell. The new quarterstaff did not cause any transition problems. I suspect it was the VFX on the weapon that was causing the problem. Also, the spell's effects on the quarterstaff seemed to last for several days and between server reboots and crashes.

Here is a list that i put together, that trys to focus on what players can do that helps while avoiding some of the more rare issues. A lot of these things help a lot. (It's largely a synthesis of the content from this and similar threads, as well as dungeoneternal.com, dragoncoast, and soulforge)

We have had an experiment of completely excluding the use of custom portraits on the PW I play on. This seems to have improved the player client stability greatly.

[Public service announcement.]

PW admins: Consider using NWNX4 with xp_bugfix 1.0.5 or later on your server to reduce player transition crashes. This release fixes a networking code problem in the game that in many cases is responsible for causing the majority of player transition crashes for heavily loaded servers.

More details are available at the usual xp_bugfix thread: http://www.nwnx.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1086

The 1.0.5 xp_bugfix build was released November 3, 2009; older builds do not include this fix. There are some additional setup instructions needed to activate the networking code fix, please check the documentation in the forum thread to make sure that you have everything working.
